NYC & Metro Area: Special Restrictions

New York City and most of the NYC metro area (Long Island, Westchester, parts of NJ) effectively prohibit residential model rocket launches through local ordinances and proximity to controlled airspace. LaGuardia, JFK, and Newark airports create dense Class B airspace over the entire metro region. All launches near NYC require extensive airspace planning and direct ATC coordination.

Upstate New York: Generally Permissive

Outside the NYC metro corridor, New York State is relatively hobbyist-friendly. New York has adopted NFPA 1122 as part of its fire code. Rural upstate areas — the Adirondacks region, the Southern Tier, the Finger Lakes, and the Capital Region — have active rocketry clubs with established launch sites and FAA waivers. Contact the New York State Fire Marshal (under the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services) for county-specific guidance.

Active Clubs in New York

Search the NAR Section Finder at nar.org for New York sections. The Hudson Valley and Capital District regions have historically strong club activity. Tripoli has prefect groups in the central and western parts of the state. Contact clubs directly — New York's club landscape changes as fields come and go — and verify their current FAA waiver altitude before planning HPR flights.
